The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell—sort of salty and green, like rain on leaves. We were standing by the edge of Nichupté Lagoon, and our guide Luis grinned as he handed us these bright orange life jackets. “You’ll want this,” he said, patting his own. I didn’t expect to actually drive a speedboat myself (I mean, my hands were shaking a little), but once we got going through the mangroves it was all noise and spray and sunlight flickering off the water. My friend kept yelling “faster!” over the engine but honestly, I was just trying not to steer us into a tree root. The lagoon felt endless—just tangled green everywhere, with birds darting low over the surface.

After that rush, it was suddenly quiet when we anchored near the reef. The Caribbean water here is so clear you can see your toes before you even jump in. Luis tossed me a mask and said something about sea turtles—he wasn’t kidding. Within minutes of snorkeling I spotted one gliding past some coral like it owned the place. There were schools of little electric-blue fish too, weaving around us like confetti. At one point my mask fogged up and I swallowed a mouthful of saltwater (not my most graceful moment), but floating there with all that color below me—I still think about that view sometimes.

We stopped at the MUSA underwater museum next, which is honestly surreal—these silent sculptures covered in algae and tiny darting fish. It’s art but also kind of spooky? Luis explained how they help rebuild coral habitats; I liked that part more than I expected. The sun was high by then and everything felt warm—the boat seats, my shoulders, even the bottled water tasted sweeter after swimming so much. On our way back someone started singing quietly (badly) under their breath; nobody minded.
