The Experience

“If you get stuck, just wave—don’t worry, we’ve all done it,” our guide Luis grinned, his sun-faded cap pushed back like he’d spent every day out here. I hadn’t expected to be nervous about driving my own speedboat in Cancun, but when you’re suddenly handed the wheel (and it’s just you), there’s this weird mix of excitement and “wait, am I really doing this?” The marina smelled like sunscreen and salt. Luis gave us a quick rundown—steering felt more like a go-kart than anything nautical. I kept glancing at the other solo drivers; one guy had already started laughing at himself before we even left the dock.

The first stretch through Nichupté lagoon was quieter than I thought—just the engine hum and the slap of water against the hull. Mangroves pressed close on both sides, green shadows flickering over my arms. At one point, a heron lifted off right in front of me and I almost forgot to steer. Luis led us in a loose line, pointing out little things—a fisherman waving from his faded skiff, a flash of something silver beneath the surface (barracuda? he said maybe). The air was thick but not too hot; I could smell wet leaves and something sharp from the brackish water.

When we reached Punta Nizuc for snorkeling, I hesitated at first—the mask always feels weird on my face. But once I slid into that clear water, it was like stepping into another world. Coral fans drifted in slow motion and fish darted around my hands. Someone near me tried to say “look!” underwater (which mostly came out as bubbles). There’s an underwater museum here too—Luis said it’s best for strong swimmers, so I just floated above one of the sculptures for a minute, letting sunlight ripple over everything. My legs cramped up after a while but honestly? Didn’t care.

Afterwards we all sort of lingered by our boats before heading back—nobody seemed in a rush. My arms were tired from gripping the wheel but I caught myself grinning anyway. It wasn’t perfect driving (I definitely zigzagged once or twice) but that made it better somehow. Even now if I close my eyes I can still hear that engine echoing off the mangroves.
