The experience

The speedboat sits at the marina, keys waiting. You drive it yourself for a full hour through the Nichupte lagoon: the immense body of water that defines Cancun's eastern edge. The route takes you past mangroves where crocodiles sun themselves at a safe distance, then opens into deeper water as you head toward Punta Nizuc, the place where the Caribbean Sea meets the lagoon's freshwater current.

Punta Nizuc is where the geography matters. The collision of salt and fresh water creates conditions fish and coral cannot find anywhere else in the region. You'll anchor here to snorkel, and the underwater museum statues sit on the seafloor: placed by the Mexican government to accelerate reef growth and protect marine life.
