The experience
How do you see a limestone formation that has stood for 500 million years without a car or a crowded tour boat? You paddle yourself. This activity puts you on a stand up paddle board in Tanjung Rhu's shallow mangrove river, where the water is calm enough to learn the stroke in the first few minutes, and the mangrove canopy opens into caves carved by time and tide. A local guide paddles with you, pointing out the old rock faces and explaining why the island's geology matters, not as a lecture, but as the reason you're looking at what you're looking at.
The 3-hour paddle covers little caves accessible only by water, the mangrove forest where the river narrows, and a swim stop at a man-made private island where the water is still and clear. You learn the history of each location and the fauna that lives there now. The pace is light exercise, not a race. The guide sets it to the group's comfort. When you're done, a boat brings you back to a floating stage (a restaurant with a view of the whole landscape), where you can order fresh seafood, a traditional dish, or just a cold drink at a reasonable price.
The boards, safety gear and transfer to the water are all included. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness and the ability to balance on a board, but no paddle experience is required. Children are welcome from age 16. The guide speaks English and Malay.

Is this one for you? This activity suits paddlers who want to move under their own power and learn the landscape from someone who lives there, rather than sit in a boat and watch. The 3-hour paddle is light exercise, so it works for anyone with moderate fitness who can balance on a board, no prior paddle experience needed, but it is not a rest day on the water.
