Step-by-step itinerary

Kilim Mangrove Kayaking and Lunch

  • See bats in limestone cave
  • Visit floating restaurant and fish farm
  • Receive kayaking gear and instructions
  • Kayak through mangrove forest and watch eagles
  • Return to fish farm for lunch

The Experience

The morning starts at a limestone cave where you'll see local bats roosting inside the rock formation, and the guide introduces you to the mangrove ecosystem and the animals living in it. From there you head to a floating fish farm and restaurant where the staff demonstrate their operation—you can watch them work and place a lunch order. This is where you get fitted with a lifevest, paddle, drybag and drinking water, and the guide walks you through how to handle the kayak before you push off.

Once in the water, you paddle into the mangrove forest following the guide, who stops at certain points to point out wildlife and explain what you're seeing. Eagle watching happens during the kayaking itself as you move through the trees and waterways—no feeding, just watching them hunt and move through their habitat. The forest is home to otters, monkeys and kingfishers too, and the narrow channels and dense growth put you close enough to see them doing their daily thing without disturbing them.

After paddling, you return to the floating fish farm for lunch: fried chicken or springrolls with fried rice, vegetable tomyum soup, fruit platter and iced lime tea. Vegan and vegetarian options are available if you order ahead. The whole outing runs four hours from start to finish.
