Step-by-step itinerary

  • Explore fish farm and crocodile cave
  • Watch monkeys and eagles
  • Stop at beach for 30 minutes swimming
  • See Kilim Geoforest Park signage

The Experience

The boat leaves from Kilim Jetty and heads straight into the mangrove forest, where the first stop is a limestone cave system home to two or three bat species. The guide points out the animals as the boat moves through the tidal ecosystem—otters, dolphins, kingfishers and eagles are all here, though sightings depend on the day and the tide. You'll pass a working fish farm, then a crocodile cave (viewable from the water), and watch for monkeys in the trees overhead. The route is designed so you see the wildlife without disturbing it, and the guide explains what you're looking at as it happens.

Tanjung Rhu beach is the swimming stop—30 minutes to wade and swim, depending on weather and tide. The beach is one of the island's quieter stretches, and the boat waits for you to return. After that, lunch happens at a floating restaurant anchored in the mangroves: fried chicken rice, tomyum soup with vegetables, French fries, watermelon slices and cordial orange juice. The restaurant sits on the water, so you eat surrounded by the same forest you've been moving through all morning.

Hotel or cruise ship pickup and drop-off are included if you book the option with transport. The tour runs on a shared boat, so you'll have other travelers aboard—groups stay small enough that the guide can answer questions and point out animals without shouting. If you want a private boat instead, you can arrange your own Grab driver to meet you at the jetty, though that's an extra cost you pay separately.

What’s included

  • Air-conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide.
  • hotel or cruise ship pickup and drop-off (depending on your booking option).
  • lunch at a floating restaurant with fried chicken rice, tomyum soup, French fries, watermelon and cordial juice.
  • all boat stops including the bat cave, fish farm, crocodile cave, monkey-watching stretch and Tanjung Rhu beach.

Is this one for you?Choose the option with hotel pickup if you're staying on the island and want to skip the logistics of reaching Kilim Jetty; book without pickup if you're already near the jetty or prefer to arrange your own transport. Either way, the shared boat keeps the group small and the guide can point out wildlife and answer questions throughout the afternoon.

Top questions

What animals will I actually see on the Kilim mangrove boat tour?

Otters, dolphins, kingfishers and eagles live in the mangroves and are often spotted from the boat. You'll also see monkeys in the trees and bats inside the limestone cave system. Sightings depend on the tide, the time of day and the season, so the guide cannot guarantee which animals appear on any single trip.

Is the 30-minute beach stop at Tanjung Rhu enough time to swim?

Tanjung Rhu beach is a shallow, quiet stretch, so 30 minutes is enough to wade and swim comfortably. The boat waits for you to return, and the stop is weather-dependent—if conditions are rough, the guide may shorten it or skip it entirely.

Does the tour include lunch, and what if I'm vegetarian?

Lunch is included at a floating restaurant in the mangroves: fried chicken rice, tomyum soup, French fries, watermelon and juice. A vegetarian option is available—let the operator know when you book if you need it. You can also buy snacks and drinks at shops at Kilim Jetty before or after the tour.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the boat, or is pickup included?

Hotel or cruise ship pickup and drop-off are included if you choose the option with transport. If you book without pickup, you'll need to get to Kilim Jetty on your own; public transportation options are available nearby. Private transport via Grab can be arranged at your own cost.

Can children and infants go on this tour?

Children are welcome from age 1 and must be accompanied by an adult. Infants can sit on an adult's lap. Infant meals are not included, so bring food for very young children if needed.

How long is the full tour, and what time does it start?

The tour runs for about 5 hours from pickup to drop-off, with 4 hours spent on the water and at stops. The operator will confirm your start time when you book, based on your hotel location and the tide schedule.
