Paddle deep into mangrove where the wildlife finds you

Kayak the Kubang Badak River through Langkawi's UNESCO Geopark mangrove forest, spotting White-bellied Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites and monitor lizards in their natural habitat. The route includes a limestone cave complex, a visit to an old charcoal kiln, and a swim at secluded Jemuruk Island before lunch at a floating restaurant. An English-speaking guide, kayak, safety boat and set lunch are included; children from age 4 are welcome with an adult.

The Experience

Two and a half hours on the water starts with kayaks and equipment provided, plus a guide who speaks English and knows where the birds are. You paddle into the Kubang Badak River—not a standard boat tour where you sit and watch, but a mangrove ecosystem you move through yourself, close enough to see the monitor lizards on the banks and the kingfishers diving. The limestone formations rise around you as you navigate deeper into the forest.

The route takes you to a prehistoric sea cave 25 meters above water level, and to the remains of a charcoal kiln where you learn how the traditional mangrove charcoal industry worked. A safety boat travels with the group. When you reach Jemuruk Island, the water is turquoise and shallow enough to swim without current—a break in the paddling where you can float and cool off.

Lunch happens at a floating restaurant after you're back, and it's a set meal cooked locally. Vegetarian options are available if you request them when you book. The guide brings bottled water for the paddle. Pinang Cave is temporarily closed for upgrades through 2026, but the rest of the itinerary runs as described with minor adjustments.
