The Experience

The morning starts with a boat ride through the mangrove river to Bat Cave, where the guide introduces you to the ecosystem and you see bats hanging overhead. From there you head to the fish farm, where you get time to change into swimwear, collect your kayaking gear (paddle, life vest, dry bag shared between two people), and watch a demonstration before pushing off into the water.

Once in the kayak, you follow the guide through the mangrove forest, paddling for roughly 2 hours while watching for animals moving through the trees and water. The route takes you to the eagle spot, where you can see the birds that represent the island. After paddling back to the fish farm, you have time to wash and change clothes before the boat returns you to the jetty.

The whole outing runs about 5 hours from pickup to drop-off. An air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel, so you don't need to arrange transport to the starting point. Lunch happens at the floating restaurant, and you get drinking water throughout the day. Bring spare clothes, flipflops, swimwear, sun lotion, a towel and insect repellent—the mangrove is beautiful but the insects are real.
