The experience

What makes this kayaking different from paddling a calm lagoon is the terrain itself. You start at the fish farm with a safety briefing and instruction from your guide, then paddle into narrow mangrove channels where the forest closes in on both sides. The route takes you past the eagle nesting area and through limestone formations that rise straight out of the water. A nature guide travels with you and explains the geology and wildlife as you go: facts about the fossilized seashells embedded in the cliff walls, the otters and monkeys that live in the canopy, the way the mangroves filter saltwater. The paddling gets more demanding in the second half, when you navigate tighter channels before heading back to the fish farm.

Lunch happens at the fish farm: fried rice with chicken or vegetables, plus cordial orange juice and bottled water. After eating, you explore the bat cave on foot with your guide. The cave holds ancient plants that have existed since the dinosaur era, which is the kind of detail that stays with you. The whole experience runs about four hours from start to finish. You get a dry bag to keep your phone and valuables safe, and all the gear (life jacket, paddle, kayak) is provided.
