Summary

Drift in the Dead Sea’s quiet waters after a desert drive from Amman

You’ll ride from Amman down through desert hills to reach the Dead Sea’s surreal shoreline, where floating comes naturally and time slows down. Expect salty air, warm sun, maybe some laughter as you try out that famous mineral mud. With hotel pickup and an easy-going local driver included, you’ll come back feeling changed — even if it’s just your skin.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ve always been curious about the Dead Sea — you hear stories, but nothing really prepares you for how strange it feels to float there. We left Amman late morning with our driver, Khaled, who had this easy way of pointing out things along the road without sounding like a guidebook. The city faded pretty fast, replaced by these wide stretches of yellow-brown hills. It’s funny how quiet the car got as we dropped lower and lower (Khaled mentioned we were heading to the lowest point on earth — I double-checked on my phone; he was right).

The first thing that hit me at the Dead Sea resort wasn’t the view — though that endless blue is something else — but the air itself. There’s this sharp, salty smell mixed with sunscreen and something almost sweet? I’m not sure if it’s the mud or just my brain trying to process it all. Anyway, floating is exactly as weird as people say: you lie back and your body just pops up like a cork. I tried to swim “normally” for a second and nearly flipped over — two Jordanian kids nearby cracked up watching me flail around. The mud is cold and sticky at first; my friend smeared it all over her arms and said she felt like a lizard basking in the sun.

After rinsing off (the showers are right by the beach), we wandered into one of those little shops near the lobby where they sell jars of black mud and salt scrubs. The woman behind the counter let us try some hand cream — she said her cousin makes it in Madaba, which made me smile for some reason. On the ride back to Amman, I kept rubbing my arm absentmindedly; my skin felt different, softer somehow. Not sure if it was just in my head or if there’s really something to all those minerals.
