The Experience
The drive out of Amman takes about an hour, and the landscape shifts as you move toward the Dead Sea. Your private, air-conditioned vehicle carries you through Jordan's desert, and the driver points out the terrain as you descend—you're heading to the lowest point on Earth's surface, which sounds dramatic until you're actually standing there and the numbers make sense. The Dead Sea sits 400 meters below sea level, and you feel the difference in the air itself.
Once you arrive at the Dead Sea resorts area, the driver walks you through the hotel options available for day use. Some include lunch, some don't; prices vary depending on which one you choose. If you've selected the all-inclusive option, entry and a meal are already sorted. From there, you head to the water. The thing nobody quite prepares you for is how the salt works—you don't swim in the Dead Sea the way you swim anywhere else. You float. Your body sits higher in the water than it should, and the sensation is strange and real and exactly what you came for. The mineral-rich water does something to your skin, and if you want to, you can cover yourself in the natural mud the sea produces, which people have been doing here for centuries.
You have ample free time to lounge on the beach, float as long as you want, and take in the views that stretch along the horizon. After you're done, you meet the driver back in the hotel lobby. There's a local shop on the way back to Amman where you can pick up beauty and skincare products made from Dead Sea mud, salt, and minerals if you want to take something home. The return drive gives you time to relax while the minerals do their work.
