The experience
The tour starts with a 3-hour drive from Amman to Petra. Once there, your private guide walks you down to the Siq entrance (or you can ride a horse if you prefer), and leads you through the long winding canyon of rose-red sandstone that opens onto the Treasury. The route continues past the Street of Facades, the Roman Theater carved into the rock face, and the Royal Tombs. Petra was hidden from the outside world until 1812, when a Swiss explorer disguised as an Arab scholar found his way in. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and counts among the New Seven Wonders of the World.
After Petra, the drive to Wadi Rum takes another hour and a half. The landscape shifts from carved stone to open desert: Wadi Rum is also called the Moon Valley for the way the sand and rock formations look under the sky. You arrive in time to watch the sunset over the dunes before the return journey to Amman or the airport. The full day runs 14 to 15 hours from pickup to drop-off.
The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and your driver handles all the driving while your guide manages the Petra portion. Pickup is included from your hotel or the airport. Specialized infant seats are available, and all areas at Petra are wheelchair accessible, as is the transportation itself. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the Petra section involves walking or the option to ride.

How much time do I actually spend exploring Petra itself?
