The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the cool hush inside St. George’s Church in Madaba—just the scrape of shoes on old stone and that faint scent of incense. Our guide, Khaled, grinned as he pointed at the mosaic map on the floor. “Sixth century,” he said, tapping his finger gently on Jerusalem’s tiny tile. I tried to take it all in but honestly, my eyes kept darting to the little details—tiny boats, rivers, names I’d only ever read about. Someone behind me whispered a prayer in Arabic. It felt like time stacked up all around us.

Driving out of Madaba toward Mount Nebo, the sky got hazier and the land stretched dry and wide. Khaled told us Moses stood here once—“Maybe right where you’re standing,” he joked—and we all squinted at the horizon together. There was a wind that made my shirt flap against my skin and for a second it was just quiet except for that sound. You could see the Dead Sea down below, silver-blue and strange. I tried to spot Jerusalem but maybe my eyes aren’t as sharp as Moses’. Still, it’s wild to stand somewhere with so much weight behind it.

We dropped down toward the Dead Sea after that—my ears popped a bit from the descent—and checked into this big resort (lunch included if you want). The air felt heavier there; salty and warm even though it wasn’t that hot out. Floating is weird—I mean really weird—you can’t sink even if you try. I laughed out loud when I realized how sticky my skin felt from all that mineral mud; Khaled said it’s good for you but who knows? There were other travelers bobbing nearby, some locals too, everyone just sort of drifting quietly or laughing at themselves.

I still think about that view from Mount Nebo sometimes—the way everything seemed both close and impossibly far away.
