The experience
The day begins at the Roman Theatre in the heart of Amman, a 2,000-year-old amphitheatre that once held over 5,000 onlookers and still hosts theatre events today. From there, you move to the Amman Citadel, perched on a hill overlooking the entire city. The site holds Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains from ancient Rabbath-Ammon, and the vantage point alone frames Amman's layered history. A walk through the old markets rounds out the city portion before the driver heads east toward the desert.
The three castles that follow are unlike typical fortifications. Kharana Palace draws historians because it looks defensive but has no evidence of ever serving that purpose: its towers are solid, the arrow slits too high to fire from. Amra Castle sits roughly 85 kilometers from Amman, beside Wadi Al-Butum, and offers a different window into Umayyad construction. Azraq Castle, the black fortress, closes the day as a lesser-known historical site that rewards the drive into the desert. The route itself is the point: you see how these structures were positioned across the landscape and what they reveal about the period that built them.
The tour runs 10 to 12 hours with hotel pickup and drop-off in Amman included. Your driver speaks English and provides water throughout the day. If you choose the option with entry tickets, those are covered. If you book transportation only, you pay for admission at each site. The vehicle is private, so the pace and stops are yours alone.

Top questions
What is the Roman Theatre of Amman actually used for today?
The Roman Theatre still hosts theatre events and performances, even though it was built over 2,000 years ago to seat more than 5,000 spectators. It remains an active venue rather than a museum piece.
Why do historians find Kharana Palace so puzzling?
Kharana Palace looks like a castle but has no evidence of ever being built to defend anyone. The towers are solid rather than hollow, and the arrow slits are positioned too high to fire weapons from, which makes its actual purpose unclear and draws scholarly attention.
How far is Amra Castle from Amman?
Amra Castle sits roughly 85 kilometers east of Amman, positioned beside Wadi Al-Butum near Jordan's Highway 40, about 21 kilometers southwest of Azraq Castle.
Does the tour include entry to all three desert castles?
Entry tickets are optional: you can book the tour with transportation and tickets included, or transportation only and pay for admission at each site when you arrive.
What happens in Amman before heading to the desert?
The day starts at the Roman Theatre in central Amman, then moves to the Citadel on the hill for views across the city and a look at Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. A walk through the old markets completes the Amman portion before the drive east begins.
