The experience

The day starts at 7 AM from your hotel in Amman. Your driver takes you first to the Amman Citadel, where you'll walk among the remains of a Roman temple, a Byzantine church, and an Umayyad palace: the layered history of the city compressed into one hilltop site. From there, it's a short walk to the Roman Theatre, a well-preserved amphitheater that dates to when Amman was called Philadelphia. Together, these two stops take about two hours.

Then comes the drive north to Jerash, roughly an hour away. Jerash is one of the largest and best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy, with columns, archways, and paved streets that have survived nearly two thousand years. You'll have time to walk the site and photograph the landscape. After Jerash, your driver takes you another hour north to Ajloun Castle, a fortress built between 1184 and 1188 by Saladin's army to watch the Jordan Valley for invaders. You get an hour to explore the castle's stone architecture and stand on the ridge where medieval sentries once kept watch. The view across the valley is the reason the castle was built there.

Your driver waits for you at each stop and brings you back to Amman by around 5 PM. The car is air-conditioned and stocked with hot and cold drinks, water, and wet wipes. You'll have a power bank if your phone needs charging. If you choose the option with a guide, a local guide joins you at Jerash to explain the site. Without the guide option, it's just you and your driver. Entry to Jerash costs 10 JD and entry to Ajloun costs 3 JD. Neither is included in the tour price.
