The experience
Seven to nine hours of driving and walking takes you through three distinct periods of the region's history. Your private driver picks you up from your hotel in or around Amman and handles all the transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, leaving you free to move through each site at your own pace. Jerash holds the largest Roman ruins outside Italy: a full ancient city with a theater, temples, and colonnaded streets that you'll have roughly three hours to walk through.
From Jerash, the route climbs to Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century fortress built by Salah al-Deen Ayoubi and designed with medieval Arab-Islamic architecture that still dominates the hilltop. An hour there gives you time to explore the structure and take in the surrounding landscape. The final stop is Umm Qais, a Greco-Roman city where the ruins sit on a ridge with views that reach across three borders: Jordan, Syria, and Palestine all visible from the same vantage point. Two hours lets you walk the archaeological museum and the remains without rushing.
Your driver speaks English and carries bottled water and coffee or tea on board. The vehicle has WiFi, and you can choose to stop for lunch at any point or linger longer at a site if something holds your attention. The tour ends back at your hotel.
