The experience
The day starts in Amman's Downtown, Al-Balad, where the Citadel, Roman Amphitheatre, Roman Nymphaeum and Umayyad Monumental Gateway stand among traditional markets, cafes and bazaars. You walk through these sites at your own pace, moving between the 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre (a 5,000-seat theatre and the most impressive relic of ancient Philadelphia), and the Citadel perched 850 meters above the city on Jebel Al-Qala'a. The Citadel itself holds the Temple of Hercules, one of the Middle East's best-preserved Roman temples, the Umayyad Palace with its mosaics and carvings, and a 6th-century Byzantine Church. The King Abdullah Mosque, recognizable by its blue dome, and the smaller Odeon theatre round out Amman's stops.
From Amman, the route heads to Madaba, known as the City of Mosaics. The centerpiece is the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George (the oldest preserved mosaic depiction of the region) alongside Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics in other ancient churches. The St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, built in the 19th century, blends Romanesque and Byzantine styles and stands as part of Madaba's Christian heritage.
The final stop is Mount Nebo, where Prophet Moses was first granted a view of the Promised Land and is said to have died. From the summit, the panoramic view stretches across the Jordan River Valley and the Holy Land. The return journey to your hotel or the Dead Sea closes the day.
