The Experience

The tour starts at the Citadel, perched on one of Amman's seven hills. You'll walk among pre-Roman ruins, the Temple of Hercules, an Ayyubid watchtower, and the Hand of Hercules statue—each one marking a different layer of the city's past. From there, the Roman Amphitheater comes next: a 2nd-century structure that once held 6,000 spectators and still commands views over downtown from its upper tiers. The stone itself is what carries the history here, not narration.

After the Amphitheater, your driver takes you through Downtown Amman on a scenic 20- to 30-minute car tour. You'll pass the Grand Al-Hussein Mosque, built in 1923 and the oldest in Jordan, then roll past Habiba Sweets—a long-standing pastry shop famous for kunafa—and Hashem Restaurant, where locals have eaten hummus, foul and falafel for decades. A stop at Rainbow Street in the Jabal Amman district gives you time to photograph the rooftop cafés and boutiques that line this vibrant stretch.

The King Abdullah I Mosque comes next. Built in the 1980s, it's the only mosque in Jordan designed specifically to welcome tourists. The blue dome and twin minarets are unmistakable on the skyline. A designated room provides modest clothing if you need it, and the entrance fee is 2 JD. Men and women enter separately during visiting hours. Depending on which tour option you book, you may also visit the Royal Automobile Museum in Al-Hussein Public Gardens—a collection of royal vehicles tracing Jordan's modern history—or The Jordan Museum in the new downtown, which holds the country's archaeological treasures and cultural artifacts in curated galleries.
