The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your central Amman hotel. Your driver doubles as a guide and speaks English. Spanish and French are available on request. From there, the day moves through the city's different eras (Roman, Byzantine, Islamic) without you having to navigate between them or figure out which sites matter. The King Abdullah Mosque comes first, recognizable by its blue mosaic dome and set near the Parliament Building and Orthodox Church. Then you head uphill to the Amman Citadel, where a local guide joins you to walk through the Temple of Hercules and the Archaeological Museum, which holds artifacts from across Jordan.

Next is the Roman Amphitheater, a 2nd-century hillside structure that once held 6,000 spectators. Your guide explains how it was built as part of the Roman city of Philadelphia and why the symmetry still holds. You'll also see the Museum of Popular Traditions, which displays traditional dress and jewelry. The tour passes the Raghadan Palace, the burial place of King Hussein, and gives you free time in the downtown markets and mosques before moving on to Rainbow Street, Amman's arts and shopping quarter. From there, you drive through the upscale neighborhoods of Abdoun and Swefieh, where luxury malls and private villas line the streets, then return to your hotel or ask to be dropped at one of the malls or at Abdali Boulevard, a newer shopping enclave.

If you want to add more, you can extend the tour to include the Jordan Museum and Royal Automobile Museum: a rare collection of vehicles ranging from King Hussein bin Ali's cars that arrived in 1916 to modern sports cars, housed in the gardens of King Hussein Park. Note that both museums close on Tuesdays. You can also upgrade to include a Turkish bath with a steam room, scrub and massage, or add an Arabic mezze lunch of small cold and hot dishes like hummus, salads, barbecued chicken and beef, served at a local restaurant. The bath-and-lunch combination stretches the tour to 8 hours. Lunch alone makes it 6 hours.

What's included in the entrance fees on this Amman tour?

The standard tour includes entry to the King Abdullah Mosque, Amman Citadel and its Archaeological Museum, the Roman Amphitheater, and the Museum of Popular Traditions.
