The Experience

Shino met us right in the hotel lobby — she had this calm energy that made me feel like I’d known her for ages. First thing she did was hand me a tiny slip of paper with my name written in hiragana (which I absolutely butchered trying to pronounce). She just laughed and said, “Don’t worry, everyone starts somewhere.” We squeezed onto the Yamanote Line together, and I caught that faint scent of bakery bread mixing with train metal. I remember thinking: so this is what a real day trip in Tokyo feels like — not just the famous stuff.

We hit Shibuya Crossing early enough that it wasn’t too crowded yet. Shino pointed out Hachiko’s statue and told us the story — honestly, I’d heard it before but somehow hearing it there, with people rushing by and a few crows cawing overhead, it felt different. After that we walked towards the Imperial Palace grounds. The moat was almost glassy and there were runners circling the walls. Shino explained how the palace survived so much change — she knew all these little details about samurai history but didn’t make it feel like a lecture. There was this moment where we just stood under some old pine trees and listened to the city hum around us.

I didn’t expect Ginza to be so… polished? The light bounced off every window; you could smell coffee drifting from somewhere expensive. We wandered past these flagship stores (I’m not really a shopper but even I got distracted by some window displays) before heading to Yanaka. Yanaka felt like another world — narrow alleys, cats everywhere, locals greeting each other quietly as they passed. We strolled through Yanaka Cemetery; it was peaceful in a way that made me lower my voice without thinking about it. There was this tiny shop selling sweet potato snacks — warm, soft inside, kind of earthy-sweet. I still think about that taste sometimes when I’m back home.
