The Experience
Hands stuffed in my jacket pockets, I watched our guide, Emi, wave us across the Shibuya Crossing like she’d done it a thousand times—maybe she had. There’s this wild pulse to the place, all those people moving at once and then suddenly it’s just us on the other side. Emi grinned and asked if we wanted a photo right in the middle. I said yes before thinking about how awkward I look in crowds but honestly, nobody cares here. The city just swallows you up.
We ducked into a tiny café for something sweet (Emi insisted we try this fluffy pancake thing—can’t remember the name, but it tasted like clouds and sugar). She told us stories about her high school days hanging around Harajuku, pointing out where all the fashion kids gather now. It was loud outside—music from some shop blasting J-pop—but inside it was warm and smelled like coffee grounds and vanilla. I tried saying thank you in Japanese; Emi laughed at my accent but seemed genuinely happy I tried.
The Imperial Palace gardens were quieter than I expected. You could hear birds if you listened past the city noise. Emi showed us where the emperor sometimes appears for New Year’s greetings—felt strange to stand so close to something that old and important. After that, Senso-ji Temple hit me with incense smoke and that low hum of people praying or just… being there. I touched one of those giant red lanterns for luck (I hope that’s allowed). We didn’t rush anywhere; Emi checked in often if we wanted to stop or see something random along the way.
I still think about that moment at Senso-ji—the smell of incense clinging to my scarf long after we left. Tokyo is big and fast but with someone like Emi guiding you, it feels less overwhelming somehow. There’s always another corner to turn or snack to try or word to mispronounce (guilty), so yeah—I’d do this private walking tour again without thinking twice.
