The Experience

The bus leaves Ginza at 7:20am or Shinjuku at 7:50am, and the first stop is Meiji Shrine. A 1920 Shinto sanctuary wrapped in forest that somehow feels separate from the city even though you're still in it. Your English-speaking guide walks you through the grounds, then you're back on the air-conditioned coach passing Harajuku (the center of Japanese pop culture, the guide will tell you), the National Diet Building with its symmetrical 1936 facade, and the Imperial Palace's East Garden or Niju-bashi Bridge, depending on the day's timing.
