The Experience

I’ll be honest—I was nervous when we first pulled up to Daikoku Parking. The air had this faint smell of gasoline and something fried from a food truck nearby. Our guide, Kenji, just grinned and said, “Wait till you see what rolls in.” I’d seen clips online but nothing really prepared me for the lineup—old Skylines, a couple of Supras, even an American muscle car sandwiched between two tiny kei cars. It was loud in the best way. Some guys nodded at us as we walked by; I tried not to stare too much at the R34 with its hood popped open.

Before all that, though, we’d stopped at APIT—the biggest auto store I’ve ever set foot in. It’s like a shrine for anyone into Japanese car culture. Shelves packed with model cars and racks of racing jackets (I almost bought one but chickened out). Kenji pointed out some rare parts—he actually knew half the staff there. The whole place buzzed with people swapping stories about their builds. I found myself wishing I could bring home more than just a keychain.

The drive itself felt like something out of Tokyo Drift—city lights flickering past as we cruised over Rainbow Bridge. At one point Kenji asked if we wanted to stop for photos by the water; I said yes without thinking twice. The skyline looked unreal reflected in the bay, and it was oddly quiet except for the hum of engines somewhere in the distance. We laughed about my terrible attempt at saying “Odaiba” (Kenji tried not to wince). On the way back we passed Tokyo Tower all lit up—if you want to stop there too, apparently you can just ask after booking.

I still think about that night sometimes—the mix of exhaust fumes and city air, strangers geeking out over cars together, how small Tokyo can feel when you’re tucked into a van with people who just get it. If you’re even a little curious about JDM or just want a different side of Tokyo after dark… well, it’s worth it.
