You'll walk through the contrast between Tokyo's traditional sacred spaces and its modern urban neighborhoods, guided by a live English speaker. The Experience
The route starts at Meiji Shrine, Tokyo's most prominent Shinto site, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his consort. The sanctuary, treasure house and surrounding structures are built from Japanese cypress with copper-plate roofs—the architecture itself teaches you something about how the shrine was designed to last. From there you move into Harajuku, one of Tokyo's most eclectic shopping districts and the epicenter of the city's youth culture. The subculture world here is where the distinctive urban fashion you see in music videos and magazines actually originates; the neighborhood is a working display of Tokyo's style evolution.
The final stop is Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple. The five-story pagoda and Thunder Gate are the visual anchors, and the temple architecture is the highlight. On the approach you'll pass food stalls and souvenir shops (at your own expense) where you can sample Japanese snacks. The tour concludes at the temple in Asakusa.
