The Experience

You leave Kyoto Station by private car and drive north toward the coast. The landscape shifts—rice fields give way to forested hills, and after about ninety minutes, the bay opens up. Amanohashidate appears first: a 3.6-kilometer sandbar covered in pine trees that stretches across the water like a natural causeway. From the mountain viewpoint above, it's framed so the sandbar looks like a bridge arching into the sky, which is why it's called the "Bridge to Heaven" and counted as one of Japan's three most famous views. After Amanohashidate, the car takes you to Ine, a fishing village a short drive away. This is where the day shifts from landmark to lived-in place. Ine's signature are the funaya—traditional wooden boat houses built directly on the water, with the family home upstairs and the boat dock underneath.
