itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Kyoto's historic sites and market

  • Visit Sanjusangen-do Temple
  • Tour Nijo Castle
  • See Kiyomizu-dera Temple view
  • Explore Nishiki Market
  • Walk through Gion Corner

“That’s where the maiko hurry past at sunset,” Kosuke said, nodding toward a narrow lane in Gion as our car slowed. I craned my neck, half-expecting to spot a flash of silk. Instead it was just the faint clatter of geta sandals somewhere behind us — or maybe I imagined it. Kosuke grew up here, so he knows which alleys are worth a peek and which are just for show. He doesn’t rush; we drifted through the district as if time didn’t matter much.

The air felt thick with incense when we stepped into Sanjusangen-do Temple — 1,001 golden statues lined up so precisely it almost made my eyes water. I tried to count a few rows before giving up. There was this hush inside, broken only by the soft shuffle of slippers on old wood. It smelled faintly sweet, like old tatami and something floral I couldn’t name. I liked that Kosuke let us linger there longer than planned — he said he still finds it calming too.

Nijo Castle was next, all heavy doors and creaking nightingale floors (they really do chirp). I’m not sure what impressed me more: the painted panels or how Kosuke explained samurai politics with such dry humor that even my teenager laughed. Lunch happened somewhere between Kiyomizu-dera’s hillside view (the city looked endless from up there) and Nishiki Market’s maze of stalls. We tried pickled plums so sour they made my cheeks ache — Kosuke grinned and said locals eat them for energy.

I thought I’d be tired by mid-afternoon but somehow wasn’t. Maybe because we never felt rushed — Kosuke seemed to sense when we needed quiet or when to steer us toward something unexpected (like that tiny sweets shop near Gion Corner). The whole day felt like wandering with an old friend who just happens to know every shortcut in Kyoto. I still think about those golden statues sometimes.
