The Experience

“That’s where the maiko hurry past at sunset,” Kosuke said, nodding toward a narrow lane in Gion as our car slowed. I craned my neck, half-expecting to spot a flash of silk. Instead it was just the faint clatter of geta sandals somewhere behind us — or maybe I imagined it. Kosuke grew up here, so he knows which alleys are worth a peek and which are just for show. He doesn’t rush; we drifted through the district as if time didn’t matter much.

The air felt thick with incense when we stepped into Sanjusangen-do Temple — 1,001 golden statues lined up so precisely it almost made my eyes water. I tried to count a few rows before giving up.
