The Experience

I’ll never forget the first time a deer bowed at me in Nara Park — I was holding those little crackers (the guide called them shika senbei), and this deer just looked me dead in the eye, dipped its head like some tiny furry monk, and waited. I laughed so hard I almost dropped my snack. Our guide, Yuki, showed us how to bow back — apparently it’s a thing here. The morning felt cool under the trees, with the smell of damp earth and a faint whiff of incense drifting from Todaiji Temple. Walking through the giant wooden gate, you can’t help but feel small; those guardian statues look like they could come alive if you blinked too long.

Todaiji itself is… well, massive. You step inside and suddenly there’s this bronze Buddha towering over everyone — people just go quiet for a second. There was a group of schoolkids giggling in the corner trying to squeeze through that hole in the pillar (Yuki said if you fit, you get good luck). We wandered around for a while, letting the calm settle in. Then it was back to our comfy van — no wrestling with train maps or crowded platforms, which honestly felt like cheating but I wasn’t complaining.

Osaka was a total switch-up: noisy, bright, kind of chaotic in that fun way. Osaka Castle pops up out of nowhere — white walls shining against all that green. Inside it’s part museum now; samurai armor everywhere and old battle maps behind glass. We didn’t linger too long though because Yuki wanted us to see Namba Yasaka Shrine before the crowds hit — that lion-head altar is wild (I tried to pronounce its name right but got laughed at). By sunset we were deep in Dotonbori with takoyaki burning our tongues and neon signs reflecting off puddles from an earlier rain. It’s loud but somehow friendly; people shout orders across stalls and nobody seems to mind if you stare a little too long at the Glico Running Man sign.

I thought I’d be exhausted by then but walking along the river with all those lights felt weirdly peaceful. Every now and then I catch myself thinking about that deer bowing back in Nara — it’s funny what sticks with you after a day like this.
