The Experience

"Try bowing back," our guide Yuki grinned as a deer eyed me in Nara Park. I did, awkwardly—half expecting nothing—and the deer actually nodded. Everyone laughed, even some locals passing by. The air smelled like grass and old trees, and I could hear schoolkids somewhere nearby, their voices bouncing between temple walls. It’s weird how peaceful it felt with all that going on. The park is huge—honestly bigger than I pictured—and the deer just wander around like they own the place (which maybe they do?).

We started out early from Osaka, sleepy but excited for this Kyoto & Nara day trip. First stop was Fushimi Inari Taisha—the one with those endless red torii gates you see everywhere online. Walking through them is different than photos though; the light flickers orange on your hands, and you catch bits of incense in the air mixed with damp earth. Yuki told us about people coming here for centuries to pray for good harvests or business luck. I tried to read some of the kanji on the gates—no chance—but it made me think about all the wishes stacked up over time.

Arashiyama was next, and honestly? The bamboo grove felt cooler than I expected (literally—like a shady green tunnel). There’s this soft hush from the wind moving through all those tall stalks overhead. We wandered past Tenryu-ji Temple too, where you can see these old pine trees reflected in a pond that looks almost too perfect to be real. At one point, I got distracted by a group of women tying omamori charms at Nonomiya Shrine—Li tried explaining what each color meant but my brain was still stuck on those black torii gates (they look so different from the usual red). Didn’t expect to care about shrines so much but here we are.

The last bit was walking along the Katsura River near Togetsu Bridge, where cherry blossoms would be everywhere in spring (we just missed them). Still pretty though—kids skipping stones, someone playing shamisen softly under a tree. On the way back I kept thinking about that moment with the deer bowing back at me. Feels silly but it kind of sticks with you.
