The Experience

We were already winding our way through the orange gates at Fushimi Inari when I realized how quiet it felt, even with other people around. Our guide, Yuki, pointed out a little fox statue tucked behind a lantern — apparently foxes are messengers here. The air smelled faintly of incense and rain on stone. I tried to count the torii but gave up after maybe twenty; it’s just endless red-orange all around you. My friend joked we’d get lost in there and honestly for a second I thought we might.

After that, we headed to Kiyomizu-dera. The bus ride was quick — maybe 20 minutes? — but enough time for Yuki to tell us about the temple’s wooden stage (built without nails, which still blows my mind). Standing up there, you can see all of Kyoto below. It was kind of hazy that morning and the city looked soft somehow. There’s this spot where you can drink from three streams for luck or love or long life… I went for luck, but who knows if I picked right.

Kinkaku-ji came next — the Golden Pavilion really does look unreal when sunlight hits it. I didn’t expect the gardens to be so peaceful, even with tour groups wandering by. There was this one old gardener raking moss under a pine tree; he nodded at us and smiled but didn’t stop working. Lunch was simple but good (I picked the option with food), and honestly after walking so much it hit the spot.

Last stop: Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest. It’s cooler there — literally cooler — and when wind moves through those tall stalks it sounds like water rushing somewhere far off. We took photos on the moon bridge (Togetsukyo), but mostly I just remember how green everything felt. My shoes got a bit muddy from yesterday’s rain, but that’s just part of it, right? Still thinking about that light coming through bamboo leaves…
