The Experience
The day starts at Nijo Castle, a World Heritage site built by the first Tokugawa shogun, where the Ninomaru Palace's carved and decorated rooms are the centerpiece. From there you move to Kinkaku-ji Temple, the Golden Pavilion, whose wooden structure is layered in pure gold and sits beside a pond. The guide then takes you to Kyoto Imperial Palace, the Emperor's residence until about 150 years ago—or if the palace is closed that day, to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine instead, which holds a national treasure main hall and draws visitors during plum blossom and autumn leaf seasons.
After lunch (served in Kyoto, with your choice of Western set menu, vegetarian set menu, or Indian thali made at a separate dining facility), you travel to Nara. The route passes through scenic countryside between the two cities. In Nara Park, you encounter the freely roaming deer considered sacred and thought to be shrine messengers. From 2025, the tour includes access to Kasuga Taisha Shrine's Main Sanctuary special visit area, where you can walk closer to the main sanctuary and view the hanging lanterns in the lantern-lined corridors—a World Heritage site from the Nara Period.
Todai-ji Temple, one of the world's largest wooden structures and a symbol of the Nara Period, closes out the day. Its huge main hall and bronze Great Buddha are the draw, though the walk from the parking lot takes about 25 minutes one-way. The guide manages all six entry fees and transport; you do not arrange tickets or navigate between sites. Road conditions and congestion may shift the order of stops and arrival times, and if Nijo Castle or the Imperial Palace is closed on your date, the tour substitutes Ryoan-ji Temple or Kitano Tenmangu Shrine without refund adjustment.

What's the walk like at Todai-ji Temple?
Todai-ji Temple requires a 25-minute walk from the parking lot in each direction. If anyone in your group uses crutches, a wheelchair, or has difficulty walking long distances, let the operator know at booking so they can advise on the day's flow.
Can I pick what I eat on this tour?
You choose your lunch option at booking: Western-style set menu, Indian thali (vegetarian, served at a separate restaurant), or no lunch, which gives you free time to eat on your own around Kyoto Station. Changes cannot be made on the day of the tour.
What happens if Kyoto Imperial Palace is closed when I go?
If the Imperial Palace is closed on Mondays or during Imperial Household Agency events, the tour visits Kitano Tenmangu Shrine instead, famous for its god of learning and national treasure main hall. If closure falls on the 25th, you visit Nishi Hongan-ji Temple instead. No refund is issued for the substitution.
Does the tour include entry to all six sites?
Yes, admission fees to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, Kyoto Imperial Palace (or its substitute), Todai-ji Temple, Nara Park and Kasuga Taisha Shrine are included, along with transport between Kyoto and Nara and the services of a National Government Licensed English Guide.
What is the Main Sanctuary special visit area at Kasuga Taisha?
From 2025, the tour includes entry to the Main Sanctuary special visit area at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, where you walk closer to the main sanctuary and view the hanging lanterns in the lantern-lined corridors. If the special area cannot be entered due to events or operations, the tour visits Kasuga Taisha Museum or Todaiji Museum instead.
How long is the whole tour?
The tour runs 10 to 11 hours total. Timing can shift depending on road conditions and how busy each site is when you arrive, so the order of stops may change from day to day.
