The experience

The day starts at your hotel. A private car and English-speaking guide arrive for pickup, and from there the route is yours to shape: follow the suggested itinerary or build your own. The Golden Pavilion comes first for most travelers: Kinkaku-ji Temple sits across a pond surrounded by Zen gardens, its gold-leaf exterior the symbol of Kyoto. From there, the car takes you to Arashiyama, where you walk through towering bamboo stalks on a forest path, then move through the riverside district past the Togetsukyo Bridge and local shops. Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in the 14th century, sits nearby with gardens that embody wabi-sabi simplicity.

The afternoon moves through Gion, Kyoto's historic geisha district, where wooden teahouses and cobblestone streets line the route. Your guide explains the culture of geiko and maiko as you walk. The day ends at Fushimi Inari Shrine, where you climb through thousands of vermilion torii gates stacked up the hillside: a spiritual finale and the most photographed moment of the tour. A professional photographer travels with you, capturing images at each stop so you're not always behind the camera.

Six to eight hours covers the full Kyoto route. If you want to add Nara (famous for its Deer Park and the Great Buddha), or Osaka, the itinerary stretches and the car adjusts. The vehicle is air-conditioned and sized for comfort. Parking, gas and expressway fees are covered. Hotel drop-off happens at the end. Admission to temples and shrines, and lunch, are separate costs you arrange as you go.

What's the difference between the Kyoto-only tour and the Kyoto with Nara or Osaka option?

The Kyoto 1 Day Private Tour stays within the city, hitting the Golden Pavilion, Arashiyama, Tenryu-ji, Gion and Fushimi Inari. The Kyoto & Nara/Osaka option adds either Nara's Deer Park and Great Buddha or Osaka's attractions to the same day, extending the hours and the route.

Do I have to follow the suggested itinerary, or can I ask the guide to change it?

The itinerary is flexible. You can follow the standard route (Golden Pavilion, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji, Gion, Fushimi Inari), or build your own plan with the guide. The driver and guide work around your preferences.

What's included in the tour price, and what do I pay separately?

How long does the full Kyoto tour take?

The standard Kyoto itinerary runs six to eight hours, depending on how long you spend at each stop and how many sites you visit. Adding Nara or Osaka extends the day further.

Will the guide take photos of me, or do I need to bring my own camera?

A professional photographer travels with you and captures images at each stop throughout the day, so you can be in the photos instead of always holding the camera. You're welcome to bring your own camera as well.

Is this tour accessible for people with mobility challenges?
