The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush—like Kyoto itself was still waking up as we pulled up to the Golden Pavilion. Our guide, Kenji, just smiled and handed me a coffee from a vending machine (still warm). The temple really does look unreal in the morning light—gold leaf glinting on the water, some ducks drifting by. Kenji pointed out a pine tree that’s older than the U.S., which made me laugh. I tried to get a photo but honestly it’s one of those places where you just end up staring for a while instead.

Next was Arashiyama. The bamboo forest is quieter than I expected—just footsteps and the wind tapping the stalks together. There’s this greenish light that makes everything feel softer. We wandered through with barely anyone else around (maybe because it was still early), and then Kenji led us to a little shop for matcha. I definitely pronounced it wrong; he grinned but didn’t correct me. The matcha tasted grassy and somehow sweet at the same time—kind of wakes you up in a different way than coffee does.

After that we strolled through Gion. It’s all narrow lanes and wooden houses—one old man sweeping his steps nodded at us like he’d seen thousands of tourists before but still cared enough to say hi. Kenji told us about geiko traditions; I tried not to stare when two maiko walked past in full makeup. There’s something about Gion at midday that feels both ancient and alive—I kept thinking about how many stories these streets must hold.

We ended at Fushimi Inari Taisha, walking under those endless red torii gates up the hillside. It started drizzling so the air smelled like wet stone and earth—somehow made it more peaceful? My legs were tired but I didn’t want to rush; Kenji said there are over 10,000 gates but nobody really counts anymore. When we got back in the car for drop-off, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone all day. Still haven’t deleted any of those photos either.
