From there, you take various modes of transportation to Gion, Kyoto's entertainment district.

Lunch happens in Gion's shopping street—you have about 75 minutes there to eat and walk through the Japanese arcade. Then you cross Shijo Bridge on foot, spending 15 minutes along the Kamo river to reach the quieter side of Gion where geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) actually work. You spend an hour in this area learning about their world and the difference between geiko and maiko; the guide points out the narrow streets and wooden machiya houses where they live and work, and if timing aligns, you might see one. After Gion, you take the train to Fushimi Inari Taisha—about 10 minutes—and spend time walking through the shrine's thousands of vermillion torii gates while the guide explains Shintoism and the site's history. Then it's a final train ride back to Kyoto Station.
