The Experience

“Don’t bow too low or they’ll think you have more crackers,” our guide Yuki grinned as a deer nudged my bag in Nara Park. I’d always pictured these famous Japanese deer as shy but nope—they’re bold, a little cheeky, and somehow still gentle. There was this earthy smell from the moss after last night’s rain, and I kept hearing kids giggle when the deer snatched their snacks. Yuki told us how the park’s been here for over a thousand years—hard to wrap your head around that kind of time while you’re dodging antlers.

Todai-ji Temple was next, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small standing under that giant wooden gate. The Buddha inside is massive—like, jaw-dropping—but it was quieter than I thought it’d be. You could hear slippers on old floorboards and someone burning incense nearby. I tried to squeeze through that “lucky” pillar hole (nope), which made Yuki laugh out loud. She explained all these bits about Buddhism I’d never really understood before. It stuck with me more than I expected.

The drive to Osaka felt quick—maybe because we were swapping snack stories with Yuki and watching city blocks blur by outside the van window. Suddenly it was all glass towers and neon signs instead of temple roofs and trees. Osaka Castle looked almost unreal against the skyline; we didn’t go inside (apparently it’s just a museum now), but the grounds were full of locals picnicking under cherry trees even though it wasn’t quite peak season yet.

Dotonbori hit me like a wave—crowds everywhere, takoyaki steam floating up from street stalls, that weird sweet-salty smell mixing with river air. We wandered through Den Den Town (so much anime merch), then America-Mura where teens posed for photos in front of graffiti walls. At some point I lost track of time—Osaka does that to you—and ended up eating something fried on a stick that Yuki insisted was “the real deal.” Still not sure what it was but… yeah, worth it.
