Nara Park & Fushimi Inari Tour: Deer and Torii Gates
Three centuries of temples and 1,000 deer in a single morning departure
This 11-hour guided tour departs from Osaka or Kyoto and visits Nara Park, Fushimi Inari Taisha and Arashiyama in one day, with an air-conditioned vehicle and live guide included. You start early—before 8:00 AM from Osaka or 9:20 AM from Kyoto—so the day holds three major sites without rushing. The guide speaks English, Italian, Korean, Chinese or Japanese depending on the group; the supplier sends your meeting point and guide contact details by email the day before departure. Luggage policy allows one free item per passenger; additional pieces cost ¥2,000 each, payable on site. Late arrivals are not accommodated on this shared tour, and the itinerary may shift due to weather or traffic without refund.
The Experience
The tour starts in Arashiyama while the morning is still fresh. You stand on Togetsukyo Bridge overlooking the river and bamboo forest, then move through the green trails before the crowds arrive. From there, the route heads to Nara Park, where over 1,000 deer roam freely—regarded as messengers of God and protected as a national natural monument for more than 1,300 years. You walk among them, feed them if you choose, and see the scale of the park without the afternoon press of visitors.
The day's centerpiece is Fushimi Inari Taisha, the headquarters of roughly 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan. Founded in 711 AD, the shrine is famous for its 10,000 vermillion torii gates stacked in tunnels up the mountainside. You walk through them—the gates narrow and darken as you climb, then open to views across Kyoto. The guide explains the history and the shrine's role in Japanese spirituality, but the walk itself is what stays with you.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and sized to the group—a small van for four to eight people, a mid-size bus for nine to fourteen, or larger depending on numbers. Travel time between sites is built into the 11-hour window, though actual arrival times shift with traffic and weather. The guide manages the pace and can adjust the order of stops if needed, though all three sites stay in the itinerary. You're expected to stay with the group for the full day; early departure forfeits any unused portion and carries no refund.

Can I choose to depart from Osaka or Kyoto, or is one location set when I book?
You pick your departure city at checkout—either Osaka or Kyoto. Osaka departures gather before 8:00 AM; Kyoto departures before 9:20 AM. The supplier emails your exact meeting point and the guide's contact details by 21:00 Japan Time the day before the tour, so confirm that email (and check spam) before you leave for the meeting point.
What time does the tour actually end, and how long is the drive back?
The tour runs 11 hours total, but actual return times depend on traffic, weather and crowd levels. The supplier advises against scheduling other activities the same day, since delays are common and the company is not responsible for additional expenses if the tour runs late. All stated times are estimates.
How many deer are at Nara Park, and can I feed them?
Over 1,000 deer roam Nara Park freely. They are protected as a national natural monument and regarded as messengers of God. You can feed them during your visit—the guide will explain how and what to offer.
What is the 10,000 torii gates experience actually like at Fushimi Inari?
Fushimi Inari Taisha has roughly 10,000 vermillion torii gates stacked in tunnels that climb the mountainside. You walk through them—the gates grow narrower and darker as you ascend, then open to views across Kyoto. The shrine was founded in 711 AD and is the headquarters of about 30,000 Inari shrines throughout Japan.
Is this tour in English, or do I need to speak Japanese?
The tour is guided in English, Italian, Korean, Chinese or Japanese depending on the group composition that day. The supplier cannot guarantee a specific language will be available, and the actual commentary language is determined on the day based on participants. If your group is mixed-language, the guide will arrange the best option.
Can I bring luggage on the tour, and what if I have more than one bag?
Each passenger may bring one piece of luggage free of charge. Additional luggage costs ¥2,000 per item, paid to the driver or guide on the day. Declare the number of bags when you book; if you don't inform the supplier in advance, the guide has the right to deny boarding.
