The experience

The first thing I remember is the white shimmer of Himeji Castle against the sky: almost too bright to look at straight on. Our guide, Emi, told us how it survived wars and earthquakes. I touched the stone wall (cool, rough) and tried to imagine samurai running up those steps. There was this faint smell of pine from somewhere nearby, maybe incense? Hard to say. We wandered through wooden corridors that creaked under our shoes. It felt like time just folds in on itself there.

Kobe was louder, Chinatown especially. The signs were all red and gold, people calling out orders for steamed buns or fried noodles. I tried something called nikuman (Emi laughed when I said it wrong, she corrected me gently). Lunch was quick but good, and we had maybe an hour to poke around shops selling things I couldn’t name. There was this sweet-salty smell everywhere, soy sauce mixed with something sugary, and honestly, I still think about that snack.

Nara Park was quieter than I expected. The deer really do just walk right up to you. One nudged my sleeve looking for crackers before wandering off toward a group of kids giggling nearby. Todaiji Temple loomed at the edge of the park: huge wooden beams darkened by centuries of weather. Inside, the Great Buddha sat silent and massive. It’s hard not to feel small in there. On the ride back to Osaka, everyone got quiet for a while. Just watching the Kansai landscape blur past as evening settled in. Funny how tired you get after a day like that, but in a good way.
