You've just landed in Osaka or you're staying nearby with a free afternoon — and you want to see more than one city without renting a car or piecing together train schedules. This Kobe and Arima Onsen day trip picks you up at 10:30am (or 11:30am depending on the season) and moves through four stops in a single loop: the harbor first, then the Western-style streets of Kitano Ijinkan, then the hot spring town, and finally Mount Rokko at dusk. The guide drives the van themselves if the group is small, which means no extra stops or waiting around.

Kobe Harbor comes first — you get an hour to walk the waterfront, see the red Mosaic Ferris Wheel, and grab lunch. Kobe Beef is the obvious choice if you want to eat something you'll remember, though the harbor has other options too. After that, Kitano Ijinkan Street is about an hour on foot through restored Western-style houses from the Meiji era, some now cafes or shops. There's a Starbucks inside a 1907 house that was rebuilt after the 1995 earthquake and designated a national cultural property — the kind of detail that makes you stop and look twice.

Arima Onsen is next, and this is where the day shifts. It's one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns, and you get free time to walk the streets, visit the public baths (Kin no Yu and Gin no Yu are the famous ones), or just sit in a cafe. The air smells like sulfur and wood smoke. If you have a tattoo, you won't be able to enter the public baths — that's a rule at most Japanese onsen, so plan accordingly. After Arima, the van takes you up Mount Rokko on the cable car to the Tenrandai Observation Deck, where the city lights spread out below you in what locals call the "Million-Dollar Night View." It's one of Japan's top three nightscapes, and it's the reason the day ends when it does.
