The tour starts with a drive north from Osaka or Kyoto to Amanohashidate, a 3.6-kilometer sandbar bordered by the Japan Sea and Amanohashidate Bay. The village is home to over 230 funaya (waterfront houses built directly over the water) that stretch along a 5-kilometer stretch of Ine Bay's southern coast. This is a working fishing community, not a reconstructed attraction. The houses and the sea coexist as they have for generations. You can walk the village, rent a bike to explore at your own pace, or add a boat ride through the bay to feed seagulls and see the funaya from the water. The boat ticket costs extra and is optional. The day ends with a return drive to Kyoto by around 6pm or Osaka by around 7pm.
