Step-by-step itinerary

Kyoto and Nara cultural highlights

  • Visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple
  • Walk Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka streets
  • Explore Yasaka Shrine
  • Walk through Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine
  • Visit Nara Park and see deer

The Experience

The day starts at Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO-listed temple perched on a hillside overlooking Kyoto. Founded in 778, it's known for a massive wooden stage that juts from the main hall and the Otowa Waterfall beneath it, where visitors drink from three streams believed to bring health, success or love. From there you walk down through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two sloped streets lined with traditional wooden townhouses, teahouses and artisanal shops—the kind of place where an hour disappears into souvenir hunting and photography.

Next comes Yasaka Shrine, a vermilion-gated Shinto shrine over 1,350 years old and home to the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous summer festivals. Then you reach Fushimi Inari Taisha, where thousands of vibrant red torii gates wind through forested slopes. Walking beneath them is the visual anchor of the day—the gates create a tunnel effect as you move deeper into the shrine's sacred pathways, past fox statues believed to be messengers of the gods.

The final stop is Nara Park, where free-roaming deer wander among lush greenery and you can reach the Tōdai-ji Temple's Central Gate. The park's scale and the casual presence of the deer—you can feed and photograph them—shifts the mood from the intensity of the shrine gates to something quieter. Round-trip transfers are included, and you choose your pickup point at checkout: either Namba Osaka Station or Kyoto Station. The tour includes transportation time in its 9 to 10 hour duration, so plan for a full day away from your hotel.

Top questions

What is Fushimi Inari Shrine and why do people walk through the torii gates?

Fushimi Inari Taisha is a shrine dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, and it's famous for thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding through the forested slopes of Mount Inari. Walking beneath them creates a tunnel-like passage through sacred pathways lined with fox statues believed to be messengers of the gods—it's the most photographed part of the tour.

Can I feed and interact with the deer in Nara Park?

Yes, Nara Park is home to friendly free-roaming deer that visitors can feed and photograph. The deer roam freely throughout the park's lush greenery, and the experience is one of the most memorable parts of the day.

Do I need to pay extra to enter the temples and shrines?

Admission to Kiyomizu-dera Temple costs 500 Yen and is not included in the tour price. Entry to the other shrines and Nara Park is included.

Where do I get picked up, and what time does the tour start?

You choose your pickup point at checkout: either Namba Osaka Station or Kyoto Station. Round-trip transfers are included. Arrive on time at the meeting point—the group will not wait for late arrivals, and there are no refunds for tardiness.

What language is the guide, and how many people are on the tour?

The guide speaks English, Japanese or Chinese (you select at checkout). Because this is a carpooling trip, group size varies, but the tour is designed to move as one group through each stop.

What happens if the weather is bad or there's heavy traffic?

Routes may change due to weather or traffic conditions. The guide will adapt the day to keep the tour moving safely and on schedule, though the main attractions remain the same.
