A sandbar of 6,700 pines, a bay of 230 boathouses, and a temple. Pick which three matter most to you today.

A private 10-hour tour of Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, with hotel pickup from Osaka or Kyoto and a customizable itinerary. You choose the attractions (the pine-covered sandbar stretching 3.6 kilometers across Miyazu Bay, the traditional funaya boathouses of Ine Bay, Chion-ji Temple, or other sites in the area), and the operator plans the route, makes reservations if needed, and handles all transport. Vehicle size ranges from 6 to 13 seats depending on your group. Highway tolls and parking are included. The remaining hours after sightseeing are travel time between Osaka or Kyoto and the Amanohashidate area.

The experience

What makes this tour different is that you're not following a set itinerary. You're building one. After booking, you tell the operator which attractions in the Amanohashidate area appeal to you, share any special requests, and they draft a route that fits your interests and the 10-hour window. If you'd rather not plan, they offer a recommended route as a starting point. Amanohashidate itself is the draw: a rare sandbar with about 6,700 pines, ranging from 20 to 170 meters wide and stretching roughly 3.6 kilometers across Miyazu Bay in the Sea of Japan. It's one of three most scenic spots in Japan, shaped by nature over thousands of years.

The recommended stops give you a sense of what's possible. Ine Bay, a member of the World's Most Beautiful Bays Club and sister bay to Mont Saint-Michel in France, holds 230 traditional funaya boathouses lined up for 5 kilometers: two-story structures with boat storage on the first floor and living space above. A sightseeing boat tour around the bay takes about 25 minutes and lets you see the funaya from the water. On calm days you might feed seabirds that fly close to the boat. Chion-ji Temple offers grand architecture and serene gardens that reflect Japan's religious heritage. You pick these or choose other attractions in the area. The operator handles the planning and logistics.

Hotel pickup and drop-off from Osaka or Kyoto are included, along with private transportation, highway tolls, parking, and an air-conditioned vehicle. You choose your vehicle size (6, 9, or 13 seats) depending on your group. The 10-hour duration includes both sightseeing time and travel time between your hotel and the Amanohashidate area. If you need a baby seat, the first one is free. A second costs 2,000 yen. Hours beyond 10 incur overtime fees (5,000 yen per hour for 6- or 9-seat vehicles, 10,000 yen for 13-seat vehicles). Night service after 21:00 local time is available for an additional 2,000 yen per hour.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How much of the 10 hours is actually spent sightseeing versus driving from Osaka or Kyoto?

The 10-hour duration includes both sightseeing time at your chosen attractions and travel time between your hotel and the Amanohashidate area. The operator will draft your itinerary to fit both into that window, so the exact split depends on which attractions you select and how far your hotel is from Osaka or Kyoto.

Can I see the funaya boathouses up close, or only from the sightseeing boat?

The sightseeing boat tour around Ine Bay takes about 25 minutes and gives you views of the 230 funaya boathouses from the water. If you want to explore them on foot or visit one as a guest house or inn, you can add that to your custom itinerary when you book.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

Private transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off, highway tolls, parking, and an air-conditioned vehicle are all included. A first baby seat is free. A second costs 2,000 yen. If you go over 10 hours, overtime is 5,000 yen per hour for 6- or 9-seat vehicles and 10,000 yen per hour for 13-seat vehicles. Night service after 21:00 local time is 2,000 yen per hour.

Do I have to book from Osaka or Kyoto, or can I choose?

You choose your departure hub when you select your tour option: either Osaka or Kyoto. The operator will pick you up from your hotel in whichever city you book from and return you there at the end of the day.

What if I don't know which attractions to pick? Can the operator suggest a route?

Yes. If you'd rather not plan the itinerary yourself, the operator offers a recommended route as a starting point. You can use that as-is or modify it to suit your interests. Either way, they'll draft the full itinerary and make any necessary reservations before your tour begins.
