The Experience

The sommelier met us at the van with a notebook and a question about what we'd tasted before, not to judge, just to know where to start. That's how the Tuscany wine tasting begins, really: someone asking what you actually like, not what you're supposed to like. The drive out takes about 25 minutes, and the landscape shifts from Florence's terracotta roofs to rolling hills planted in neat rows of vines. The vineyard itself is quieter than you'd expect. Back at the winery, the tasting happens in a room with high ceilings and bottles lining the walls. The sommelier walks you through three or four wines made on-site, and you learn to notice things you'd normally miss: the color against the light, how it smells before you taste it, why one wine feels heavier than another. There's no pretension to it, just information and time to actually taste. After the tasting, lunch arrives: traditional Tuscan food, the kind that tastes like it came from someone's kitchen rather than a menu.
