Tuscan Vineyard & Winery: Grapes to Glass in One Afternoon

You're picked up in an air-conditioned van and driven 25 minutes into Tuscan vineyards, where you walk the rows and learn which grapes become which wines. Back at the winery, a sommelier guides you through a tasting of wines made on-site, then you sit down to a traditional Tuscan lunch with wine pairings and a tour of the cellar. The whole day is small-group, which means you're not herded through with thirty other people.

5h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Travel 25 minutes to vineyards
  • Learn about grape varieties
  • Taste different grapes
  • Return to winery
  • Guided wine tasting on-site
  • Enjoy traditional Tuscan lunch
  • Tour the wine cellar

The Experience

The sommelier met us at the van with a notebook and a question about what we'd tasted before — not to judge, just to know where to start. That's how the Tuscany wine tasting begins, really: someone asking what you actually like, not what you're supposed to like. The drive out takes about 25 minutes, and the landscape shifts from Florence's terracotta roofs to rolling hills planted in neat rows of vines. The vineyard itself is quieter than you'd expect — just the sound of leaves and the guide pointing out the different grape varieties growing right there, explaining which ones go into the wines you're about to taste.

Back at the winery, the tasting happens in a room with high ceilings and bottles lining the walls. The sommelier walks you through three or four wines made on-site, and you learn to notice things you'd normally miss — the color against the light, how it smells before you taste it, why one wine feels heavier than another. There's no pretension to it, just information and time to actually taste. After the tasting, lunch arrives: traditional Tuscan food, the kind that tastes like it came from someone's kitchen rather than a menu. Bread, cured meats, cheese, pasta, vegetables — and the wines you just tasted pair with it all. If you're vegan or vegetarian, they've got a separate spread ready, not an afterthought.

The cellar tour happens after lunch, when you're relaxed and the sommelier can show you how the wine actually gets made — the barrels, the aging process, the whole thing. By the end, the winery shop is there if you want to take a bottle or two home, but there's no pressure. The van back to Florence takes the same 25 minutes, and you're dropped off knowing more about wine than you did that morning, without having felt like you were in school.
