The experience

Once we set off with our driver, it didn't take long to leave the Florence traffic behind and roll into vineyard country. The minivan was cool and comfortable (important, because it was still hot in the city), and he knew exactly where the light would be best later. That's the thing about doing this in the late afternoon: when the sun goes down, you're out in the countryside, not watching it through a window. You're actually in it, standing in the vines while the sky changes color.

The first winery was a family operation that makes Chianti Classico. The owners showed us around the vineyard, and then we tasted the Classico and a Super Tuscan they're proud of, paired with a typical Italian appetizer. After that, we moved on to the second estate for another tasting and a proper look at the landscape as the light started to shift.

By the time we reached the second winery, the sun was lower and the whole valley had turned golden. The driver had timed it so we weren't rushed. There was time to sit with the wine and just be there while the light did what it does. No one was pushing you back to the minivan, and along the way there were plenty of chances to pull over for photos. The medieval villages we passed, like Montefioralle and Badia a Passignano, felt like actual places where people lived, not sets.
