The Experience

We were already halfway through our second glass when the breeze picked up—carrying that earthy, late-summer smell you only get in Tuscany. The view from the terrace at San Giorgio a Lapi really does stretch out over those rolling hills you see in postcards, but it’s quieter than I expected. Our host, Paolo, poured a pale rosé and laughed about how his father still argues with him over which vineyard makes the best grapes. At one point Paolo’s wife brought out tomato gruel—thick with basil and olive oil—and said her grandmother made it every summer. We ate slowly, nobody rushed us. Even when a tractor rattled by on the road below or someone’s phone buzzed (not mine for once), it felt like time stretched out here in a way I can’t explain. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
