The experience

Your driver meets you at the Livorno dock and takes you straight to Pisa. You'll have an hour at the Piazza del Duomo, the Square of Miracles, to see the Leaning Tower, the cathedral, the baptistry and Giotto's bell tower in their sage green, white and dusky pink marble. If you want to climb the tower itself, that's a separate fee and must be booked several days before your cruise arrives.

Florence gets the rest of the day. Your driver drops you at Piazza della Repubblica in the city center, and from there you're on foot. Start at Piazzale Michelangelo, high above the city, where a bronze David stands in the square and you can see the whole panorama at once: the Arno, Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo's dome, Santa Croce and the medieval tower of Palazzo Vecchio all in one view. Then walk down to the Duomo itself at Piazza del Duomo to see Brunelleschi's cupola and the cathedral's scale up close. Cross the Arno on Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge the Germans left standing in Florence during World War II, and walk through the medieval streets to Santa Croce Basilica, where Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo and Rossini are buried. The rest of the afternoon is yours to wander Piazza della Signoria, shop, eat Tuscan food, or sit in a square.
