The experience

The tour leaves the port of Livorno in a private Mercedes minivan and heads to Pisa first, where you drive through the city to reach the Piazza dei Miracoli. The cathedral square that holds the Baptistry, the Cathedral, the Campo Santo cemetery, and the Leaning Tower itself. Pisa was a powerful maritime republic in the 11th century, and the square shows why: these are among the most important monuments in Italy. You see them by car and on foot, moving at the pace the group sets.

After Pisa, you drive inland to Lucca, the charming medieval walled town where most of the day unfolds. The ramparts that ring the old city are now a tree-lined promenade where you can walk or rent a bike (5 euros per bike per hour, paid on the day) and look down into the palazzi and piazzas below. Inside the walls, you pass the Church of San Michele in Foro, which stands on the site of the original Roman forum, then walk Via Fillungo, the main shopping street, to reach the Church of San Frediano with its 6th-century origins and the tomb of Saint Zita, mentioned in Dante's Inferno. The Piazza Anfiteatro, a unique-shaped arena built in the 1st century AD, is another stop. The Cathedral of San Martino holds the Volto Santo, a cedar-wood crucifix said to be a true portrait of Jesus carved by Nicodemus, an eyewitness to the crucifixion. Lucca is also known for its artisans and delis selling Tuscan specialties and olive oil.
