Carrara Marble Quarries & Lucca from Livorno Port: 9-Hour Tour
Michelangelo sourced his marble blocks from the quarries you'll see today.
A 9-hour shore excursion from Livorno port combines Carrara's working marble quarries with Lucca's medieval walled city. After a scenic minivan drive with an English-speaking guide, you visit the open-air Fanti Scritti marble museum free of charge, then have the option to join a 70-minute Jeep tour deep into the largest white marble quarries. The afternoon shifts to Lucca, where you explore the Renaissance city walls, the Duomo, the Roman Amphitheatrum and its market square before returning to port.
The experience
The day starts at 8am from Livorno or La Spezia port in an air-conditioned minivan. Your English-speaking driver provides commentary on local history, art and food during the drive to Carrara: roughly 90 minutes north. The quarries themselves are vast, terraced into the mountainside, and the Fanti Scritti open-air museum sits within them, free to walk through and showing how marble extraction has shaped the region for centuries. If you want to go deeper into the working quarries, a local Jeep tour operator runs 70-minute excursions for €10 per person, paid on site. These vehicles navigate the steep terrain and active mining zones where the white stone Michelangelo used for the David and other masterpieces still comes from.
At 11:15am the minivan departs for Lucca, about 45 minutes away. Lunch is on your own at one of the local trattorie near the old city center. The driver can recommend spots. After eating, you have free time to walk Lucca's complete ring of Renaissance walls (a rare intact system), visit the Duomo with its intricate marble facade, see the Roman Amphitheatrum (now a piazza ringed with buildings), and browse the open-air market. At 4pm the drive back to port begins, arriving by early evening depending on traffic and which port you started from.
Bottled water and air-conditioned transport are included throughout. The tour is built for cruise passengers, so the timing is locked to standard port schedules. You provide your ship name, docking time and re-boarding time at booking so the driver can plan the return. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with a baby.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see where Michelangelo's marble came from and have time to explore a complete medieval walled city in one day: the fixed schedule and port-timed return make it work for cruise passengers with tight re-boarding windows. If you prefer a slower pace or want to spend the full day in just one place, a shorter Carrara-only excursion or a separate Lucca day trip might suit you better.

Top questions
What exactly is the Fanti Scritti marble museum in Carrara?
Fanti Scritti is an open-air museum set within the marble quarry landscape itself, showing the history and methods of marble extraction in the region. Entry is free, and it gives context to the working quarries you see around it. You walk through displays about how the stone has been cut and moved for centuries.
Can I skip the Jeep tour and just see the quarries from the minivan?
Yes. The Jeep tour is optional and costs €10 per person, paid directly to the operator on site. Many travelers walk the Fanti Scritti museum and the surrounding quarry area without booking the Jeep. The minivan driver can show you the scale of the quarries from accessible viewpoints.
How much time do I actually have in Lucca?
You arrive around 11:15am and depart at 4pm, giving you roughly five hours in the city. After lunch (which you choose and pay for), you have several hours to walk the walls, visit the Duomo and Amphitheatrum, and explore the market and streets at your own pace.
What's included in the price, and what do I pay extra for?
Transport by minivan, the English-speaking driver, and free entry to the Fanti Scritti museum are included. You pay separately for lunch in Lucca (not included) and the optional Jeep quarry tour if you choose it (€10 per person on site). Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
Does this tour work if my ship docks at La Spezia instead of Livorno?
Yes. La Spezia is one of the two pickup options at checkout. The route and timing are the same. You just depart from La Spezia port instead. Let the operator know your ship details at booking so the return time aligns with your re-boarding.
