The experience
The trek starts with hotel pickup at 7am and a drive to Sembalun village, where the actual climb begins around 8am. The first day is a steady ascent through open meadow, passing through four checkpoints as the elevation climbs from 1,300 to 1,800 meters. After lunch at Pos 2, you push on to the crater rim at 2,639 meters. A three-hour stretch that includes a prolonged steep climb. You camp here overnight and can watch both sunset and sunrise from the rim itself.
Day two starts in darkness at 2am with hot drinks and light breakfast, then the final push to the summit begins at 3am. You reach the 3,726-meter peak around 6am as the sun rises, with panoramic views across Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa and the crater lake below. The descent takes seven hours total: two hours down to camp, breakfast, then five more hours back to Sembalun.
Your guide speaks English and handles navigation and pacing. A porter carries the shared gear (tent, sleeping bag, mattress and toilet tent), so you carry only a day pack. Meals and drinking water are provided throughout, and the national park entrance fee is included. After finishing, transport runs to Senggigi, Mataram or Bangsal harbour depending on where you're headed next.
