You camp on the crater rim itself at high altitude, not at a lower camp.

A 2-day guided trek up Mount Rinjani in Lombok reaches the Senaru crater rim (2,641 m) on the first day, where you camp and watch sunset over Mount Agung in Bali. Day two descends through rainforest back to Senaru village. Groups stay under six trekkers. An English-speaking guide and porters handle the route, and all meals, camping gear, park entry and travel insurance are included.

The experience

The trek starts at 08:00 from Rinjani Trek Center in Senaru and climbs through dense tropical forest, stopping at Post 2 (1,500 m) for tea and biscuits, then Post 3 (2,000 m) for lunch. From there it's a two-hour push to the crater rim at 2,641 meters, where you set up camp for the night. The views from here (the sunset over Mount Agung and smoke from the volcano at the lake's edge) are the payoff for the day's climb.

Day two reverses the route. After breakfast and sunrise at the rim, you descend through rainforest for five hours back to Senaru village, with lunch along the way. The descent is easier on the legs than the climb, and the forest canopy changes as you drop elevation. An experienced guide leads throughout, and porters carry the heavy gear so you carry only a daypack.

Camping equipment is provided: tent, sleeping bag, 5 cm foam mat, camping chair, toilet tent and pillow. Meals are three a day plus snacks and fruit. You get three liters of water daily plus drinks during trekking. Park entry, travel insurance and all transport to and from Senaru are included. Tipping for the guide and porters is your choice at the end.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 16 years). Under 6: they can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How hard is the climb to the crater rim on day one?

The trek gains about 1,100 meters over roughly six hours of walking, with breaks built in. You need a moderate level of fitness. The pace is steady but not rushed, and the guide adjusts for the group.

What's the camping setup like at the crater rim?

You sleep in a provided tent with a sleeping bag and 5 cm foam mat. A separate toilet tent is set up nearby. It's basic but functional, and the location, on the rim itself, makes up for the simplicity.

Do I need to bring my own trekking gear?

No. Tent, sleeping bag, mat, camping chair, toilet tent and trekking poles are all provided. Bring a daypack, layers for the cold at altitude, and sturdy hiking boots. The operator will confirm what else to pack after you book.

What happens if I can't complete the full trek?

Porters can help carry you down if needed, though the descent is generally easier than the ascent. Let the guide know early if you're struggling. The group moves together and the pace can be adjusted.

Is the crater rim safe for camping at that altitude?

Yes. The rim sits at 2,641 meters, which is high but not extreme for acclimatized trekkers. You'll have one night to adjust before descending, and the guide monitors the group for any altitude issues.
