The experience
Mount Rinjani rises 3,726 meters above sea level as an active volcano with dense forest at its base and grassland higher up. The trek to the crater rim takes two days of climbing, with the first day broken into four rest stops as the trail steepens and the forest gives way to open slopes. You camp overnight at Senaru Crater Rim at 2,641 meters, where the sunset and the views of the volcanic cone inside the crater are the reward for the day's effort. The second day is the descent, with a longer lunch break at Pos 2 before you reach Senaru around 1pm.
Your guide speaks English and the porters carry the tent, sleeping bags, mattress, pillow, cooking gear and all food and water for the trek: three liters per person per day. The night before the trek, you stay in a hotel in Senaru so you can start early after breakfast on Day 1. Pick up happens from your hotel anywhere on Lombok, and after you return to Senaru on Day 2, transfer takes you to your next destination. Park entrance is included, as is a toilet tent and paper for the trek.
The climb is steep and the altitude is real. You need at least moderate fitness to manage the two days of hiking and the thin air at the rim. The descent is easier on the knees than the ascent, but the total time on the mountain is substantial. Bring your own rain jacket, long pants, gloves and trekking shoes. A head lamp, small daily pack and extra porter for personal luggage are available as add-ons at checkout.
