The experience
You start early: breakfast at your hotel, then a drive to Rinjani Trek Center in Senaru to register before the trek kicks off around 8 a.m. The climb takes you through thick tropical forest, passing two rest shelters (Pos 2 Montong Satas at 1,500 meters and Pos 3 Mondokan Lolak at 2,000 meters) before lunch at the third shelter. From there the trail continues to the Crater Rim at 2,641 meters, where you'll watch the sunset over Mount Agung in Bali and see smoke rising from the new volcano by the lake.
You sleep at the rim in a tent with a sleeping mat and sleeping bag provided. After breakfast and sunrise the next morning, the descent back to Senaru Village takes about five hours through the same forest. If you're lucky, you might spot the rare black monkey on the way down. The trek ends in the village by early afternoon.
All meals, snacks, fruits and drinks are included throughout the trek. The operator supplies tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, camping chairs, toilet tents and pillows. An experienced English-speaking guide and professional porters handle the route and carry the heavier loads. Mount Rinjani National Park entrance fees are covered in the price. Tipping for the guide and porter is optional, and you can arrange an extra porter at checkout if you want someone to carry your personal belongings.
