The experience

The route splits into three distinct pushes. Day one covers the approach: a 45-minute drive from Senaru village to Sembalun gate, then a walk to the crater rim camp at Sembalun, passing through Pos 1, Pos 2 and Pos 3 with breaks between each. Day two is the hardest. You leave camp at 2:30 am to reach the summit around sunrise (a three-hour climb), descend for two hours, then walk down to the crater lake and hot spring before climbing back up to the second camp at Senaru crater rim. Day three is the exit: wake at 6 am for sunrise, then a five-hour walk down to Senaru gate, finishing by early afternoon.

Your guide speaks English and manages the logistics. Porters carry the food, water and trekking equipment so you travel light. You get meals and soft drinks during the trek, a tent, sleeping bag, mattress and a toilet tent at each camp. The trek demands sustained effort (steep terrain, early starts and high altitude), so you need a high level of physical fitness. The operator arranges transport to Sembalun on day one. Accommodation before the trek and the park entrance fee are options you choose at checkout.

Operated by Rinjani Trek Adventure

Is this one for you? This trek suits experienced hikers who are fit enough for steep terrain and early starts. The three-day pace means you summit at sunrise on day two and exit by early afternoon on day three, so the route fits a tight schedule, but the physical demand is high and there is no rest day to recover between pushes.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (10 to 14 years). Under 10: they can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How hard is the walk up to Rinjani's summit?

The summit push starts at 2:30 am and takes about three hours of steep climbing to reach the peak before sunrise. You then descend for two hours, so the round trip is roughly five hours of continuous walking at altitude with minimal rest.

What do I need to bring for a 3-day trek on Rinjani?

The operator provides tent, sleeping bag, mattress, toilet tent and all camping gear. Bring trekking boots, layers for cold at altitude, sun protection, a headlamp for the pre-dawn summit start, and personal medications. The guide and porters handle food, water and equipment transport.

Is there a rest day, or do we trek all three days?

All three days involve trekking. Day one is the approach to the first camp; day two covers the summit and descent to the second camp; day three is the exit walk down to the gate. There is no rest day built into the itinerary.

What is the crater lake like, and how much time do we spend there?

The crater lake sits at the base of the summit after your descent on day two. You walk down to the lake and hot spring, then climb back up to the second camp, so the time at the lake is part of the day's continuous walk rather than a long stop.
