The experience
You arrive in Senaru village the day before the trek starts. Hotel pickup brings you to the trailhead, and you stay overnight in Senaru accommodation so you're ready to begin early the next morning. The climb to the crater rim takes one day of hiking. The route passes through changing terrain as you ascend Mount Rinjani. You camp at the rim that night in a tent with a sleeping bag and mat provided, and a portable toilet tent is set up for the group.
The crater rim camp sits above the Lake of Segara Anak, the volcanic lake inside the mountain. Sunrise from the rim shows the lake, the summit, and on clear days, Mount Agung across the strait in Bali and the three Gili islands off Lombok's north coast. After breakfast and time to take in the panorama, you hike back down to Senaru village on day three. A live guide who speaks English and Malay leads the trek, and porters carry the camping gear and cooking equipment. Meals and drinking water are provided during the hike.
The trek is graded for moderate fitness. You'll need to bring your own hiking shoes and long pants. A camera is useful for the views but not provided. Sandals and tips for the guide and porters are optional. The route is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, or pregnancy, and the minimum age is 12.

What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Lake of Segara Anak and where do I see it on this trek?
The Lake of Segara Anak is the volcanic crater lake inside Mount Rinjani. You camp at the crater rim on night two, so the lake sits directly below your campsite. Sunrise views from the rim look down onto it, and on clear mornings you can see across the water to the summit and beyond to Bali and the Gili islands.
Do I need to reach the summit, or does this trek stop at the crater rim?
This trek stops at the crater rim. You hike to the rim on day two and camp there overnight, then descend on day three. The summit is a separate, longer climb that this route does not include.
What happens on the first day before the trek begins?
On day one, you're picked up from your hotel and brought to Senaru village, where you check into accommodation for the night. This gives you time to rest and prepare before the hike starts early the next morning.
What meals and water are provided during the 3 days?
Dinner is provided on the night before the trek in Senaru, and food and drinks are included during the hike itself. You'll eat breakfast at the crater rim camp before descending on day three.
